Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Justin Bieber to star in 100 billion-dollar movie of Robin Hood
Posted on Monday, January 23rd, 2012
OK, you got me. That is an outrageous lie. I was thinking the other day about a seminar I went to a few years ago when I worked at The Times when they were telling us how to write headlines for online articles and, basically, they said you should always put the names of stars in the title (and large sums of money). That way, claimed the experts, when people are browsing the net they will be attracted to your site by the double-whammy glamour of celebs and buckets of cash. Sorry, low trick, I know. But there is some justification in running these guys’ names in the headline: I quite often get asked who should play Robin Hood and Alan Dale if they ever (you never know, fingers crossed!) make a movie of one of my books.
It’s quite a tough one, actually. Who should be the heroes of the Outlaw Chronicles? I like Johnny Depp enormously, and Jude Law seems like a nice chap, too (I met him briefly before Christmas) and he’s a first-class actor. I don’t really know much about Justin Bieber, except that he’s insanely popular with the young ‘uns, although he seems a bit thick; actually, as dumb as a lump of cheddar – sorry, Beliebers, but there it is!
So who should it be? Who do you think should play Alan? And who would be a convincingly ruthless Robin Hood? Email me and let me know!

King’s Man will shortly be available as an Audio book, hooray! – and while the hardback is listed as unavailable on Amazon (some sort of glitch that they can’t seem to fix) I have copies of the book at home which I will sign, wrap-up and send to you at a very reasonable price, if you really want one. Contact me if you want a copy, and we’ll make some suitable arrangement.
Alan Rickman as Robin Hood – he’d have the right type of ruthless character but with the humour underneath
Alan Dale – trickier – what about Benedict Cumberbatch? Very good in Sherlock and I thought him super in Stuart My life Backwards
Actually, I like the idea of Alan Rickman as RH. It would be a kind of joke on him being Sheriff of Nottingham in the Kevin Costner version of RH. And I love Cumberbatch – a truly brilliant Sherlock. But too old, maybe?
I think Richard Armitage would make a good Robin. He was a pretty good Guy of Gisborne. I agree with futheron, Benedict Cumberbatch for Alan Dale. Alan Rickman’s a good choice but he’ll always be the Sheriff of Nottingham.
Surely after your recent filming experience as Jester No 5 in the porn version of Henry V, you should be thinking about getting yourself a role in the film of Outlaw too. King Richard maybe? Or his codpiece?
This is something I’ve pondered since I read Outlaw……An actor called Sam Riley was rumoured to play R.H in Ridley Scott’s film, I think he would be pretty cool, and he was a real shit in the latest version of Brighton Rock, maybe even Christian Bale(totally cold-hot)…James McAvoy as Alan or Eddie Redmayne……..Definatley Sean Bean as Little John, maybe something to do with the fact I’m a massive Sharpe fan, but I could easily imagine him yelling “God’s hairy gonads!!”…..Or something similar!!
I see Ralph Fiennes (I adore him!) as Robin Hood. Alan Rickman a great choice but maybe a little bit too old? ;)
Robert Downey, Jr. would be the next great suggestion for the role of Robin. What do you think about him? Or maybe is he too handsome? ;)
Johnny Depp is a brilliant actor yet I cannot see him as any character of the book.
Alan Dale – Benedict Cumberbatch seems perfect to me!
Best wishes,
E.
I agree people – Benedict C as Alan, and Evelyn: I like the sound of Ralph Fienns as Robin too (loved him in The Constant Gardener). If I’m honest with ya, anyone should be allowed to play Robin, except Russell Crowe!
All the best,
Alex
As Alan Dale i would like to see possibly Robert Sheehan? Saw him in season of the witch and he fitted in well with his role.
And for Robin Hood, if the actor was younger I would have said Liam Neeson as his characters always play calm people but who have a dark side to them, but all in all I would settle for Daniel Craig.
Jonas Armstrong…hes good with the Robin Hood character
Since I no longer go to the movies or watch much television anymore, I’m certainly out of my league on this topic. The only one mentioned that I know anything about is Johnny Depp – and I am convinced that that man can play any role and do it very well!
Sean Bean as Little John, Pete, I couldn’t agree more!
But nobody comes to my mind as for the role of King Richard the Lionheart. Donald Sutherland would be perfect but if he was younger. Any suggestions?
Cheers,
E.
Hello from Newmarket Ontario Canada.
Huge Robin Hood fan. Love your first 3 books and your unique approach to the legend.
This is a fun exercise.
I envision Gerard Butler as the ideal Outlaw Chronicals Robin Hood. I think he could play the ruthless Robin very well, combining intensity, a violent nature and charm when appropriate (Crowe would be great as well). My ideal Alan Dale would be Orlando Bloom and I would love to see the brilliant John Hannah (‘Batiantus’ in the Starz Spartacus TV Series) cast in a main villain role, perhaps the wicked Sheriff, Sir Ralph Murdac.
Keep up the great work Angus and lets get this film done!
Thanks.
Deane
Thanks to everyone for the ideas. I think I’m going to go for Christian Bale as Robin and Orlando Bloom as Alan. Sean Bean as Little John. And I personally think Tom Hollander would be perfect as evil Sheriff Murdac. OK, there we have it: now all we have to do is to persuade some Hollywood mogul to make the film.
And, if we do make a movie, all of you can come to the premiere!
Jude Law would make a great Alan Dale, as would Christian Bale. For Robin Hood, I think you are overlooking a potential scene stealer. Kim Coates from the TV series “Sons Of Anarchy”.
